  • Kaidan Alenko – Sir, it’s good to see you, how are you holding up?
  • Admiral David Anderson – Kaiden, I won’t lie, it’s rough down here. I know it was hard on you, leaving Earth like that, but you know as well as I do that the Citadel is our only real hope of surviving this. You have to get the Council on our side.
  • Kaiden – I know sir. I… have some news. gestures behind him, Commander Jane Shepard steps up
  • Anderson – Shepard… I… But… Joker swore you were dead, that you didn’t make it off the Collector base when it blew.
  • Shepard – Captain Anderson, it’s… good to see you.
  • Anderson – uh…
  • Kaiden – Admiral, sir, there’s a lot I need to explain. This isn’t the… original Shepard sir. She’s a clone grown by Cerberus for spare parts. Apparently she was stolen by a Cerberus splinter group, and then liberated by some of Liara’s people. Apparently she has some of her memories, but nothing since the SR1 was destroyed.
  • Anderson – A… clone? That’s… a bit hard to believe.
  • Shepard – It’s true sir. And yes, it’s hard for me to believe too. To avoid confusion I started using the name of my grandmother, Catherine Shepard.
  • Anderson – But… who else knows you’re a clone?
  • Kaiden – Almost no-one sir. Liara, of course, and some of her people. Also those of us aboard the Normandy. There’s a… well… a plan to pass her off as the original. Apparently Liara’s people have already falsified the Council archives. We simply tell everyone that the Shepard that worked for Cerberus was the clone, an imposter of some sort, and this one can step up and be a rallying point. Frankly, sir, we need her fame and her particular talents if we’re going to rally a bunch of frightened politicians.
  • Anderson – I agree, so long as.. well… no offense to you, Shepard, but I’m hoping there’s enough of you in there to pull this off.
  • Shepard, quietly – So do I sir.
  • Anderson – It’s a risk, but we all have to take some crazy risks if we’re going to win this thing. Kaiden, thanks for letting me know. It gives all of us here on Earth hope to know that you and your people are out there looking for help.
  • Kaiden – Thank you sir.
  • Anderson – Anderson out.

Sir,

This report is a collation and summary of reports submitted by various members of my squad.

  1. Aleksandr Davidson visited his sister Ilena Davidson at the laboratory headquarters of Task Force Aurora. While there, he witnessed Dr. Garret Bryson‘s assistant shoot the doctor in the head. Davidson reports that the assistant was under the effects of some overt form of mind-control when it happened. When Operative Davidson attempted his own biotic control abilities, the assistant was able to momentarily control Davidson as well before collapsing. Although Task Force Aurora does possess a piece of Sovereign, there were some irregularities in how this particular mind-control manifested. Subsequent discussion with Spectre Kaiden Alenko led to the hypothesis that the mind-control used on Bryson’s assistant was biotic in some fashion, which would rule out Reaper indoctrination. The only direct clue was a phrase the assistant spoke while under the effects: “The Darkness Must Not Be Breached.”
  2. Dr. Bryson’s daughter, Dr. Anneliese “Ann” Bryson, is now theoretically in charge of Task Force Aurora, but she is out of contact at a dig site in the 1337 Argus system. This is the same system where ExoGeni found a new Prothean tomb world. Apparently this system came to Task Force Aurora’s attention as a result of ExoGeni’s survey data. Dr. Bryson’s interest was not in the Prothean tombs but on a different planet entirely, one that showed signs of once being habitable, and inhabited by, a sentient species about a billion years ago. This accords with Task Force Aurora’s mandate to investigate whatever weapon or creature destroyed the Leviathan of Dis (albeit temporarily) a billion years ago.
  3. Operative Melsany Ward’s daughter and her adoptive family have been lured to the human colony of Elysium. There is the suspicion of foul play by Alphonse Lorraine
  4. Operative Sebastian Murphy reports a private debriefing with Rear Admiral Sinclair of the Systems Alliance. The admiral mentioned that Cerberus has attacked the colony of Benning and is abducting civilians for an unknown purpose. The Alliance is stretched too thin to respond.

As your most recent communication indicates we have some time before our next major operation, we will most likely be pursuing one or more of the above leads.

  • Fought our way to the University of Spaedar’s coliseum. Observed General Gaius Corinthus and a depleted squad engaged in fighting retreat from a horde of thousands of Reaper-converted civilians.
  • Called Operative Prasi Ptychokota to extract us in shuttle, fought cover-action to give the General space to escape.
  • Encountered new Reaper-converted phenotype:
    Me3 brute
  • Appears to be Turian/Krogan hybrid creature. Extremely resilient in combat, devastating in close quarters. Nearly lost Operative Tessara Eris
  • Successfully extracted General Corinthus back to Primarch Valen’s position, then extracted both assets to General Adrien Victus. We then removed all three assets from Taetrus.
  • Currently hiding in the Mactare system awaiting Turian counter-attack. This written report a supplement to oral report via QEC.

Delivered by hand, Routed for archival purposes via Operative Circe T’Siri

Ma’am,

As we passed through the Exodus Cluster en-route to Mars, we permitted Ka’hairal Balak to depart. His stated intent was to blend in with the Batarian refugees at the Citadel and to try to help them as best he could. Circe also passed on what little news was coming out of the Sol system, which indicated the Reapers had come in force much as they had to Kar’Shan.

We passed through the Arcturus system and witnessed the wreckage of the former capitol of the Systems Alliance, as well as the wreckage of most of the human Fourth Fleet.

As we arrived on Mars, we noticed the lack of transmissions or traffic. Everything indicated that the Martian Archives were empty. As we approached in a shuttle, we made contact with the Reluctant. Kurnow filled us in that Catherine Shepard had taken the mechs and gone into the facility to try to rescue you from a Cerberus attack.

We infiltrated the facility where we discovered that apparently Cerberus had managed to vent all the atmosphere from the facility which strongly suggested an inside-agent. We made contact with you and Shepard. Shepard continued to draw Cerberus attention while we rendezvoused with you near the labs. We engaged Cerberus in a series of heated firefights. As we approached the tram, we lost communication with Shepard and our ship, although we didn’t notice this fact until Shepard arrived in the company of SPecTRe Kaidan Alenko and James Vega. Spectre Alenko originally called for us to put down our weapons and identify ourselves, but apparently he recognized you, and Shepard also indicated we weren’t hostiles. We joined forces and proceeded to the archives.

After some more fighting, we arrived. You began data extraction when once again The Illusive Man appeared via holographic projection. Once again Melsany Ward shorted out his emitter before he could engage us in any sort of dialogue. We discovered a Cerberus agent stealing the data and seeking to delete it from the systems. Vega, Melsany, myself, and Sebastian Murphy captured the agent while Lia’Danna vas Rayya, aided by your Prothean VI, managed to restore the deleted data and procure a full copy. The Cerberus agent proved to be a sophisticated synthetic platform which, when its capture appeared imminent, self-destructed. We took the “corpse” with us.

The destruction of the AI agent restored our communications. Our respective ships informed us that Reapers were in the system. We departed in haste, agreeing with Spectre Alenko to rendezvous on the Citadel.

We briefed you on the Reaper situation, you briefed us on the data you’ve recovered from the various Prothean ruins over the last three years, specifically on this “Crucible” device. I would suggest you have Thesalia Kyrathis help smooth the way in your upcoming meeting with Spectre Alenko and the Council if you haven’t already done so.

As we journeyed to the Citadel, Operative Ward experimented with the broken AI corpse and activated a backup failsafe. The Cerberus AI nearly managed to compromise a number of vital systems on the Twilight until Sebastian and Aleksandr Davidson rendered it inoperable while Lia’Danna fought off the malicious software intrusion. Lia’Danna indicates she could probably use some of the highly sophisticated code, along with our existing advanced VI, to create an AI of her own aboard the ship.

On a personal note, there was, of course, a lot of interpersonal discussion about the Reapers and sheer threat they represent. A number of my squadmates have family or friends on Earth. I have family actively engaged against them in Turian space. I appreciate the effort you made to give us information on our various loved ones. I know you have a galaxy-wide network to run and the Council to sway, but the concern was noted and appreciated.

Captain Bahktian,

I know that in a moment of concern I let certain… information slip. Nevertheless, in the interests of maintaining internal consistency with our various records and archives, it may be wise to continue to use a more formal third-person when referring to the Broker, and referring to him with the masculine pronoun. One can never be too careful, and providing clues as to the Broker’s identity, even within an encrypted report transmitted via QEC, is a habit we should probably not develop.

I know we all have greater concerns here than what must seem to be a fit of pedantry, but I suspect the integrity of the Broker’s network and the Broker’s identity will become all the more important as we increase our efforts against this new threat.

On a personal note, my prayers go with your family, particularly your youngest brother aboard the Dreadnought Mehrkuri. May they all be successful in their attempts to strike back at the Reapers near Taetrus.

  • Have escaped Geth-controlled Dholen system, returned to Migrant Fleet with salvaged Geth hardware and data.
  • Tali’Zorah vas Normandy has been acclaimed as Admiral. Reported to her that Geth are merely throwing processing power at the problem of Dholen’s star, navigational capability does not represent potential counter to proposed Quarian LADAR-confusing anti-geth weapon.
  • Admiral Zorah seemed partially disappointed. Seems torn between what she clearly recognizes as the last chance of the Quarian species to avoid inevitable extinction and the sheer scale of the proposed gamble. Entire species at stake.
  • Admiral Zorah expresses personal gratitude to the Broker and willingness to owe a favor in future.
  • Will await further orders

  • Upon receiving report on Reaper invasion of Batarian/Human/Turian space, have proceeded at full speed to Mactare system, planet Taetrus, under current orders to extract high-level Turian hierarchy command from Reaper warzone.
  • En route, studied technology plans provided by “M. Ward” for anti-indoctrination implants. Crude. With time, should be able to significantly improve them. All squad members accepted existing design for now except Fortuna Corinthus
  • Upon the realignment of the Trebin relay, flood of Turian refugees entered Trebin system from Mactare system. Upon transiting relay and approaching Taetrus, saw Reapers in orbit.
  • Stealth systems appear functional. Did not come under Reaper attack in space.
  • Capitol city, Vallum, one immense conflagration. Suspect Reaper activity coupled with Turian desire to leave nothing useful for invaders.
  • Entered high-atmosphere over continent of Eluria, particularly the city of Spaedar. Reapers walking among the ruins, active ground war in the city. Picked up encoded military radio signals south-east of the city, being reflected off of fractal scattering relays to avoid enemy targeting on command positions.
  • Boarded shuttle, decrypted communication, Operative Corinthus spoke to a General Adrien Victus who was coordinating the ground campaign. Got clearance to dock.
  • General Victus recognized Operative Fortuna Corinthus. Over the course of multiple interactions it became clear that not only is Operative Corinthus a native of Taetrus, as you already informed us, but also that she has a somewhat bloody history here.
  • Operative Corinthus convinced General Victus that he needed to return to Palaven with us. He insisted that we recover the Primarch of Taetrus, Idus Valen as well as General Gaius Corinthus, who is apparently Fortuna’s grand-father, and who apparently wants Fortuna dead for some reason that has not yet been adequately explained.
  • We took the shuttle as close to the active warzone as we dared. We left Operative Prasi with the shuttle for emergency extraction if necessary. Remainder of squad, supported by Turian infantry led by Lt. Astrae Rubicum, entered the ruins.
  • Discovered Reaper method of troop-deployment: slow-falling meteorites that impact like artillery, and spill forth shock-troops consisting of what appear to be individuals of Batarian, Turian, and Human extraction, converted into cybernetic soldiers.
  • Files on three encountered types included:

Cannibal

Marauder

Husk

  • Opted to aim for Primarch Valen’s position first, arrange for fallback from General Corinthus’ position. Located Primarch Valen who seemed even more offended by Operative Fortuna’s presence. Secured his agreement to depart Taetrus by agreeing to his condition that he be transferred to any counter-attack fleet. Gave him assurances. Lied.
  • Sending this report via communication relay in shuttle. Entering active warzone to find General Corinthus.

Routed via Operative Circe T’Siri

Sir,

Without putting too fine a point on it, the Reapers are here. Attached is video taken from our escape from the surface of Kar’Shan during the invasion (file: karshan-skyline).
Reaper ruin

You can see, at marker 3:12.04, the one in sector 012.1 experiences a sudden nuclear detonation, which knocks some of its “legs” off, whereupon the remainder of the Batarian fleet successfully destroys it. That was the supposedly “dead” Leviathan of Dis. It was, so far as we could tell before evacuating the system, the only Reaper casualty.

I’ll back up so you can get the full narrative. Our new Asari negotiator Thesalia Kyrathis spoke with Ka’hairal Balak. He apparently told a tale of growing suspicion of his own government and their motives over the course of the last twenty years. He spent that last three years using his security clearance with the Batarian External Forces uncovering evidence of an extensive cabal slowly seizing the reigns of power throughout the hegemony dating back twenty years. I won’t belabor the details, as I’m sure it’s obvious that he was seeing the pernicious effects of indoctrination on those involved in studying the Leviathan of Dis. We know that the Leviathan, even “dead”, possessed the power to indoctrinate from the files of Operation Dispater. Balak offered to sell to you all the data he had gathered on this conspiracy. In exchange, he asked that you prepare a black op to destroy the facility where the Leviathan was being kept. As this was already our objective, the deal was an easy one to strike.

We spent a couple of days preparing. Melsany Ward came up with an experimental implant that she hoped would provide some protection from indoctrination using state-of-the-art biotic amps repurposed to use the skull as a resonator. The technical schematics are attached. We had Balak provide forged documentation portraying us as a cargo of top-quality technical slaves being delivered, along with reactor parts, to the facility. The idea being, once inside, we would use our biotics to procure weapons and equipment, smuggling some in with the reactor parts, and then proceed to gather the data on the Leviathan and blow the facility. We procured a small tactical nuke which we planned to set in the facility’s fusion reactor.

The plan went reasonably well until we got to the hangar where Leviathan was. We immediately noticed that there were a great many people of a great many species, all apparently working on the immense derelict Reaper, and who were fairly glassy-eyed when it came to our intrusion. Almost as soon as we entered, however, it became clear that the Leviathan was not dead.

Apparently, the indoctrinated personnel had spent twenty years doing spot-repairs on the hulk. It thrummed to life as we entered and spoke to us as it proceeded to pull itself loose from its moorings and take off.

The next few moments are not entirely clear. The Leviathan gave off a powerful series of sub-audible frequencies that seemed to confuse our thinking. Lia’Danna vas Rayya was able to get most of the data on the system, but we were unable to retrieve all of it (file: karshan-leviathan). There were sporadic moments of friendly fire, as well as a few near-death experiences as we struggled to achieve our objective while a massive ship more than a kilometer long was taunting us and shaking the hangar apart. Ultimately, I made the decision to abandon the plan of destroying the facility with the nuke and instead we made a last-ditch effort to plant the nuke on the escaping Reaper, which we managed successfully before fleeing the collapsing facility.

The video attached above shows the detonation of that device. The Batarian navy was being chewed up as we fled in the Twilight, but they did have the tactical presence of mind to capitalize on the already-weakened Reaper vessel and were able to destroy it.

As the video, and supplementary data, shows, Kar’Shan is very likely a total loss. The Reapers did not follow expected tactics and did not cut off the Mass Relay. Instead, they appeared to be almost herding fleeing refugee ships and shuttles toward escape.

The Leviathan’s words to us that stand out most strongly in my mind: “I am the Herald of our return, the next cycle begins.”

Protocol Saelan-5, imminent combat against superior force, automated report summary

  • Kept waiting on Migrant Fleet for politics to resolve themselves. Bored. Investigated on own initiative.
  • Hacked Migrant Fleet social media systems, sent ship’s Engineer Shala’Shar vas Usela to gather “word on street.”
  • Found social trends over past 8-10 months toward war of conquest with the Geth, retake Rannoch.
  • Treason trial of Tali’Zorah vas Normandy 8 months ago was political show trial intended to gauge public reaction to potential war effort, general sentiment toward war rising ever since.
    • Pressure toward war: Geth “star envelope”, also called Dyson Bubble, or Dyson Sphere. Geth construction over last 241 years, intended to be single repository of all Geth programs, boosting Geth processing power and intelligence to the point where Quarian technology could not compete. Essentially, deadline beyond which retaking Rannoch would never be possible, death of all Quarian pseudo-religious hopes and dreams.
    • Reason for hope: New weapon developed by Admiral Daro’Xen based on research done by Admiral Rael’Zorah, Tali’s father. Details of weapon not shared with Quarian populace, but existence widely known, resulting in post-mortem heroic narrative for Admiral Rael’Zorah, thus political and social pressure behind Cerberus blackmail.
    • Nature of Weapon: Tali’Zorah gave general outline of nature of weapon on promise that we, and the Broker’s network, would not let this information reach the Geth, feared extinction of her entire people. Will append file. General tactic based on massed surprise attack, destroy star envelope and store Geth programs before Geth can develop a countermeasure, reduce Geth intelligence for subsequent war of fleets.
  • Arranged deal with Admiral Shala’Raan vas Tonbey, sold Broker’s accumulated intel on Geth LADAR sensor frequencies, FTL communications, encryption algorithms, etc. accumulated over the last five years for 5 billion credits, and data on the Geth star envelope.
  • Attended hearing where evidence presented exonerating Rael’Zorah and exposing those Quarians blackmailed by Cerberus
  • Tali’Zorah being floated to take her father’s seat on the Admiralty Board
    • Tali’Zorah asked us, as a favor, to enter the Dholen system, which is the Relay-gate to the Perseus Veil cluster, and washed in strong electromagnetic interference from the system’s sun.
    • Dholan system full of Geth, mining resources and fuel, seemingly capable of operating despite the sun’s interference.
    • Tali’Zorah’s concern is that unknown Geth technology that permits navigation in the Dholen system might represent unexpected resistance to Quarian secret weapon. Wishes us to capture Geth navigation and sensor systems for return to Migrant Fleet and analysis.
    • Stealth-capabilities of the Orpheus useful in avoiding Geth attention, presence of dedicated AI makes navigation possible but not easy.
    • Have been scouting Dholen, have found suitable ship for ambush. Preparing ambush

Sir,

We returned Dr. T’Soni to the Citadel so she could make the necessary contacts with Alliance officers for access to Mars. In that time, I opted to attempt to prepare the Turian military for potential Reaper attack through personal contacts. I am not confident that it will go anywhere, but the attempt was made. Upon our departure once more, Dr. T’Soni brought a new medical doctor aboard, Dr. Karin Chakwas. Apparently she was the chief medical officer aboard both Normandies, and was brought aboard to take over the care of Catherine Shepard.

We journeyed to the nearby Bekenstein system where Dr. T’Soni revealed the “gift” she had alluded to previously, namely a prototype Asari stealth frigate named the Twilight.

Stealthfrigate

She seemed quite proud of herself for procuring it. It would seem our efforts in reuniting her with her father, Matriarch Aethyta, bore fruit. The matriarch pulled some strings. Dr. T’Soni indicated that this ship was to become ours, while she takes the Reluctant to Mars.

The ship comes with some strings, however. The Asari Republics didn’t want to let their prototype go without some oversight, and so they assigned an asari junior diplomat named Thesalia Kyrathis as “XO” of the ship. Dr. T’Soni was also proud of the fact that she had covertly arranged for that particular diplomat to be assigned, as Thesalia is, apparently, one of your covert agents. It was apparent to me, however, that Thesalia is fundamentally inexperienced in combat situations. Operative Sebastian Murphy and I agreed that we should ensure that the military chain of command, at least in combat, should bypass her entirely.

Of the former crew of the Reluctant, we transferred with us our medic, Iris Krayt, and our chef and security officer Ganar Snarle. We then spent some time putting the ship through its paces and getting to know the new crew.

Dr. T’Soni briefed us on our new mission, for which a stealth frigate would appear to be appropriate. We are to follow up on Operation Dispater, finding a way to infiltrate Batarian space, locate the research facility where the Leviathan of Dis is being studied, and to procure any and all data we can on it. The Batarians are the only species to have spent the last fifteen years studying a Reaper, and this represents, apparently, the best opportunity to learn something about the enemy.

She gave us a lead, a wanted Batarian terrorist and Commander in the Batarian External Forces (their intelligence branch), Ka’hairal Balak. We are approaching the coordinates that Balak sent to your network. I hope his claim to have Batarian state secrets to sell is genuine and not some sort of elaborate terrorist ploy.

  • Put down momentary mercenary rebellion seeking to steal ship we rightfully stole from Cerberus
  • Debriefed Tali’Zorah vas Normandy. Learned following data points:
    • “Reapers” apparently factual, Saren’s flagship Sovereign a sentient machine
    • Shepard spoke with Sovereign on Virmire in Tali’Zorah’s presence, partial conversation recorded and played for us (file: sovereign-boasts)
    • Asari neuroscientist Rana Thanoptis on Virmire, studying “indoctrination”, a process of neurochemical alteration utilized by Sovereign and, theoretically, other Reapers to create subtle agents. (file: indoctrination-methodology)
    • Saren knew of indoctrination, believed himself too useful to be subject to it. Was incorrect. Data point: indoctrinated agents rarely know it.
    • Cerberus actively salvaging Reaper technology from beyond Omega-4 relay, utilizing Reaper tech to cybernetically alter soldiers, chance of Cerberus indoctrination high.

Routed via Operative Liara T’soni

Sir,

I consulted with Dr. T’Soni on how best to approach the archive-infiltration plan. The original plan of random chaos mixed with targeted hacks of C-Sec communications and routing data was adequate but would put our team in a time-crunch. It would also take up much of Lia’Danna vas Rayya‘s time and attention that might otherwise be spent defusing internal defenses and bypassing security in the archives. Dr. T’Soni mentioned that Harkin, aka Fade, had reached out from his cell in C-Sec lockup to his network of criminal allies and mercenaries, and also to our own organization in hopes of getting freed from confinement. Liara suggested that if we used Natividad Valle de Los Huesos and our CAT-6 mercenaries to coordinate with Fade’s allies and orchestrate a large-scale jail-break attempt on our timetable. This would tie up C-Sec resources, and give our archive infiltration team much more time to reach our objective.

We did consider the cost in C-Sec agents potentially harmed or killed in this plan, but ultimately decided that ensuring the success of the primary mission took priority over any possible losses.

As a result, our infiltration into the Council archives was relatively straightforward. Lia’Danna, operating remotely, defused and deactivated various defenses while we made our way through the archives. We made it into the SPeCTRe section and successfully updated Shepard’s biometrics with the clone’s information. I also downloaded certain index data on currently active SPeCTRes, their names, species, and some basic data on current investigations. I’m uploading that data with this report. (File: Archive-Spectre-23)

Things were not uniformly smooth, however. We did opt to secure more information resources on the way out. I managed to find a significant chunk of data on the Relay-314 Incident, but when Melsany Ward sought out Alliance military secrets, something went wrong and that archive-vault fell from the crane causing some damage. It wasn’t until Sebastian Murphy sought data on Council interactions with mercenary companies, however, that our intrusion was detected. Lia’Danna was unable to shut down the alarm signal quickly enough, and we found ourselves confronted by SPeCTRe Jondum Bau and some combat drones.

He recognized Melsany and me from our encounter on the Hock Estate, and therefore knew that we work for you. I opted to have Shepard remove her helmet, causing Bau some consternation. When asked about the purpose behind the break-in, I informed Bau that we had obtained a detailed list of all currently active SPeCTRes. I believe that he accepted this as a reasonable explaination for our presence. We struck a deal that he would keep our presence there, as well as Shepard’s involvement, a secret, provided we promised to owe him a favor sometime in the future, to be cleared through you.

Bau’s a SPeCTRe, and a clever one. He seemed to be suspicious that our Shepard was not the real thing, but she seems to have correctly, if inadvertently, answered a trick comment he let drop. This may have thrown him further off the trail of why we were really there. Considering that none of the things we were caught disturbing were anywhere near the SPeCTRe archives, it may well be that Shepard’s clone-nature is safe for now. However, he will certainly realize that we would have had to be near the SPeCTRe archives in order to obtain the list of active agents and assignments.

We did opt to tell Shepard that she’s a clone. She has decided to adopt her grandmother’s name, Catherine, so we can refer to her in public in a way that doesn’t immediately identify her to onlookers. This will also, I suspect, help her internally process the idea that she’s a different person.

We departed the Citadel amidst the chaos of Fade’s attempted jailbreak, which apparently failed. We have resumed Dr. T’soni’s mission to Kahje.

Sir,

Dr. T’soni will doubtless be making her own report on the Prothean data she uncovered. Since her report on that data will be far more comprehensive than mine, due to her academic expertise, this report focuses largely upon Cerberus and their interference with our activities on the Hanar homeworld.

We arrived at Kahje. It was clear that the Hanar hold Dr. T’Soni in great respect, doubtless because of her expertise on the subject of their gods. We were assigned a Drell “guide” named Kitha Sarys. It was clear that Sarys was probably something more like an agent or assassin meant to ensure that our heavily-armed party was not a danger to the Hanar. She led us to Liara’s contact, a Hanar priest-scientist named Dr. Zathys. He and Liara spoke at some length and in detail about her findings on the planet of Ilos. Eventually we were permitted to take a submersible to the most holy shrine to the Enkindlers, which was also a former Prothean laboratory and archive.

On the way to the shrine, we were ambushed by Cerberus submersibles who were acting in concert with an entrenched squad within the entrance to the shrine complex. After a brief but pitched battle, the Cerberus squad broke. Shockingly, rather than run or surrender many of the Cerberus troops spontaneously died. Upon removing their helmets, we saw some rather shocking implants:

Cerberus husk

It would appear that Cerberus is using Reaper technology to augment their soldiers.

We arrived in the heart of the shrine facility, where Melsany killed the leader of the Cerberus squad. As Dr. T’Soni began inputting the sensory decompiling program she created from salvaged Prothean VIs, a small holo-drone rose from the omni-tool of the Cerberus squadleader and projected the form of the Illusive Man. He threatened Liara, and seemed to know Sebastian by sight. He wasn’t able to monologue for long, though, as Melsany sabotaged the holographic drone.

We surmised that he was communicating via QEC, but for that to be the case, there needed to be a ship on the planet or in orbit.

As Liara continued her download, Kitha Sarys appeared from the shadows. She expressed suitable shock at Cerberus’ presence, and reported everything to the Illuminated Council. A planet-wide alert was issued. Shortly thereafter Kahje C&C noted the blue-shift of an FTL jump where a ship had not previously been. We suspect a Cerberus stealth vessel was in the area.

There was a good deal of talk and diplomacy surrounding the combat in the shrine and the data that Dr. T’Soni recovered from the Prothean archive. We are currently preparing to depart Kahje space. Dr. T’Soni has indicated that she will require the Reluctant for transportation to the Prothean archives on Mars. But first we are returning to the Citadel while she continues processing the data she recovered. This will also give Dr. T’Soni a chance to contact the Systems Alliance for permission to access the Mars archive.

  • Commenced operation with mercenaries led by Zaeed Massani and Jorgal Nask. Employed distraction provided by Talons gang to access airlock of Cerberus stealth frigate Prometheus.
  • Took ship without undue difficulty. Discovered ship equipped with “Advanced Defense Matrix” shackled-AI, programmed for electronic countermeasures. Bargained with “ADaM” for “his” “life.” It claimed that AI level programming is required to utilize the “Reaper” IFF system that permits travel through the Omega-4 relay, and that if we intended to do so, we needed to keep it intact.
  • Reached tentative accommodation with AI. Killed Cerberus crew. Interrogated Cerberus scientist. Learned about advanced nanotechnological research, including conversion method to create Cerberus super soldiers. Scientist claimed it was all based on Reaper technology salvaged from beyond the Omega-4 relay. Compressed summary of scientist’s data attached ((files: Processing.212, micro-forged-nanotechnology.878))
  • Utilized ship’s stealth systems to evade detection by Omega. Zaeed provided more complete details about his plans once vessel was stolen. Zaeed intended rescue / salvage mission, seeking survivors or bodies of assault on Collector base. Offered salvage and plunder to Jorgal Nask. Offered us the ship if we would stay on and aid his mission. Agreed.
  • Utilized ADM and the IFF systems to traverse Omega-4 relay. Relay leads to small safe zone deep inside the galactic core. Safe zone cluttered with millenia of ship debris, including a derelict “Reaper.”
    Derelict
  • Zaeed claimed derelict used as relay system for QEC control-signal connecting “Reapers” with Collector base. Also source of much of Cerberus salvage.
  • Two Cerberus bases in the safe zone, first base origin of Adjutants, Cerberus flagship Elbrus engaged there. My virus aboard Elbrus broadcasting data. Bypassed that conflict to scout second base dedicated to Collector base salvage.
  • Utilized Cerberus Kodiak-pattern shuttle and proper approach codes provided by ADM to land. Assaulted base.
  • Jorgal Nask and other mercenaries assaulted station Command and Control. Zaeed and Lachesis Cell assaulted bio-labs and medical facilities.
  • Found labs dedicated to “husk” creation and study ((see addendum file: nanotechnological-transformation.676)), labs dedicated to study of Collectors and Collector corpses. Cerberus apparently using salvaged Collector stasis pods containing abducted human colonists for these experiments.
  • Found burned corpse of Commander Jane Shepard, was salvaged by Cerberus in attempt to extract data from sophisticated cybernetic implants. Took body.
  • Found living Quarian sedated in sterilized clean room, identified as Tali’Zorah vas Normandy. Almost didn’t recognize species without ubiquitous environment suit.
  • Engaged in cumbersome system of sterilizing human clean-room suit for containing Quarian without fatal shock to systems. Quarian had apparently utilized Collector stasis pod to survive destruction of base.
  • Accompanying Mercenaries looted everything, set base reactor to explode.
  • Once aboard ship, noticed Elbrus and accompanying frigates departing. Scanned through stolen Elbrus data, learned assault on Adjutant-overrun base legitimate, once base pacified, Aria T’Loak taken captive. Elbrus did not investigate destruction of second base, but left two accompanying frigates to patrol and investigate.
  • Evaded frigates using stealth systems. Returned to Omega nebula.
  • Tali’Zorah requests that we return her to the migrant fleet, promises compensation. Zaeed requests that we drop him and Jorgal Nask off at planet Alingon in the Faryar system of the Hourglass Nebula. Claims he will arrange for fencing of stolen loot and delivery of Shepard’s corpse to the Alliance.

Operative Saelan Corl,

You have done well. The data you have sent me on the Omega-4 relay and what lies beyond is precisely what I need, but the data on Cerberus activities there is even more valuable for current conflict. You and your fellow Operatives should find compensation in your accounts for your efforts.

Further instructions: Accommodate Zaeed, then Tali’Zorah. I want you to discover the current location of the Quarian Migrant Fleet. Attached is a data-file containing current disturbing trends in Quarian procurements. It would appear they seek to install dreadnought-scale weaponry on their live-ships. Analysis indicates they would only do this if they were planning a total war where they are willing to risk their civilian population. Discover, if possible, who they intend to attack, how and why.

If possible, do not permit Zaeed Massani to return Shepard’s corpse to the Alliance. Learn whatever you can from the body, and take every effort to keep secret the direct evidence that she is dead.

I have a base on Alingon that monitors pirate comm traffic in the Hourglass nebula. This base should have facilities on-hand to give the Prometheus a new paint job and new identification. If you have reached an arrangement with this shackled AI, you may continue to use this vessel in the course of your work. You should consider a new name for it.

More details forthcoming.
